The Source

The AM&E Magazine

Spring 2023
Vol. 27, No. 1

Welcome readers to the inaugural issue of The Source, the new digital format for the MBA specialization in Arts, Media, and Entertainment Management (AM&E) newsletter. We are thrilled to provide the extended AM&E community with more frequent and timely updates, as well as opportunities for better connection and communication among students, faculty, alumni, and friends of the program.

This year has been eventful and busy, as it was our first full year being fully back in person after COVID. We are excited to announce that Celia Smith, CEO of Luminato Festival Toronto, has joined our faculty as a sessional lecturer. Additionally, Niko Markakis has joined AM&E as the new Program Administrator, bringing his extensive experience as an administrator at York and his background and degree in Dance from York AMPD.

We have many highlights to share for the academic year 2022-23. Lisa de Wilde and Trina McQueen ran the WIFT Media Leadership Program at the Schulich Executive Education Center for the first time after a three-year pandemic hiatus. This spring, we resumed in-person special lectures at Schulich, inviting Jean La Rose, the founder of APTN, to discuss the successes and challenges behind building Canada's first indigenous broadcast network. As usual, 2022-23 boasts an impressive roster of world-class guest lecturers and participants in our Adopt-an-Exec program.

Peter Lyman's Nordicity report commissioned by DM@X assessed the state of the Canadian creative sector was researched and delivered by some of the many AM&E alumni who now work at the firm. With his publications in Cartt, Doug Barrett has been public voice in helping the community navigate the complexities of Bill C-11. The bill, which passed on April 27, 2023 will now receive a letter of direction from the government to the CRTC. We expect the CRTC will hold hearings that may last for a year or more, to bring the new benefits of the bill to the creative industries. We will cover all these developments closely in next year’s AM&E course content.

We hope you enjoy this issue of and look forward to keeping you updated on all the latest news and developments from the AM&E program. Please stay in touch and let us know what you are up to, we are always delighted to hear from you.

Sincerely,

Rogers Signture
